Overview

Araki Mataemon was born in Araki-mura, Hattori-go, Iga Province in 1599. His father was a lower-class samurai who worked for Tsutsui Sadatsugu, Lord of Yamatokoriyama Castle before working for Ikeda Tadakatsu of Bizen Okayama. Since he was a young child, Mataemon trained at the Yagyu Dojo, and refined his technique of Yagyu Shinkage Ryu school of swordsmanship. During the Kanei period, he was invited by Matsudaira Tadaaki, Lord of Koriyama as an instructor of swordsmanship of 250 kokus (fiefs) and lived in Minoyama, the area south of Koriyama Castle. The stone signpost of the site of Araki Mataemon’s residence is located in front of a distinctive property east of Prefectural Route Shiromawari Line’s Yadasuj’s alley.
