Overview

The stone walls around the Tenshudai are stacked in the style of nozura-zumi (natural stones stacked as they are). Here, the foundation of Heijo-kyo (the capital city of Japan during the Nara period)’s Rasho Mon Gates, stone jizos (statues), and Gorintos (five ring statues) are stacked in an unsparingly manner. The Sakasa (upside-down) Jizo is one of these stones. It got its name from its position: the stone jizo is stacked upside-down, holding an orb in its left hand, and a staff on its right.
The statue stands around 90 cm tall and the inscription date is July 18, 1523.
